Kagoshima City, in the southern part of Kyushu, boasts a population of about 600,000, making it the fourth-largest city in Kyushu. Here lies “Sakurajima”. Kagoshima city center and Sakurajima face each other across Kinko Bay, similar to the city of Naples in Italy with Mount Vesuvius. The distance between Kagoshima city center and the Sakurajima crater is very close, about 10 km in a straight line, and during frequent eruptions, volcanic ash often falls in the city. However, residents are proud of Sakurajima as a symbol of Kagoshima.Sakurajima is still erupting today, emitting volcanic smoke. Although you cannot climb the mountain itself, a volcano monitoring system is in place, and systems are established to allow people to live safely at the foot of Sakurajima.This journey is themed around “Sakurajima”, allowing you to feel the threat of the earth and catch a glimpse of the lives of people living with this volcano. |
